About Me
Hello there! I am a high schooler with a strong passion for all things food! I go by the name of Moonbakes, which is a testament to both my favorite snack (mooncakes) and most eminently, my Chinese culture, inasmuch symbolized by the moon.
Every year (excluding the year 2020 for obvious reasons) I've spent a great amount of time with my relatives on their farm learning about the diverse ways organic food is cultivated and cooked. Growing up with such a background, I've always been mesmerized by the cheap, organic approaches to cooking Chinese cuisine, all the while maintaining the food's nutritious and palatable content.
As my interest in organic foods bloomed in the high school science classroom, I started viewing cooking with multi-faceted perspectives. Food was not only an emblem of my culture, but also what makes the world go round. I became immersed by the research articles regarding food sustainability, all of which is only magnified through the way we consume food. Sooner than later, I realized that cheap, nutritious, home-cooked meals are one of the many things we as consumers can do to get closer to a more sustainable food system. Luckily, for me, I had been cooking like this since I've learned.
Thus, in October 2019, I decided to finally blog and publish a couple of recipes I've cooked with my relatives, as I realized that this can be the most ideal way I can spread knowledge to others. My first few recipes were oriented to be vegan, made with organic ingredients, and significantly influenced by Asian culinary techniques. Yet going forward, (particularly amid a seething pandemic... when I was essentially stuck in my kitchen all the time), I learned new cooking techniques, that weren't necessarily vegan, but remitted the same degree of sustainability.
In sharing my cooking journey, as I am still learning myself, I hope to inspire others alike to follow along and grasp a deeper understanding on how food is interconnected with both culture as well as the global food system. And thus far, this journey has been liberating. It has allowed me to embrace the innovative mindset I've reaped from my experiences doing art and photography, the knowledge I've gained from the sciences, my fervid passion for food, and most importantly, my heritage. Together, I hope to not only guide but also walk with the rest of you all on this exciting food journey!
